What your child can practice

Build a solid from unit cubes

The base has a fixed length and width. Add or remove layers to match the height in the story. Every cube has sides of one unit and occupies one cubic unit of space.

Look inside each layer

The solid view shows the prism, while separate layer maps reveal every cube, including those hidden inside. Each square on a map is the top of one cube. Count a layer, then multiply by the number of layers.

Connect the model to a formula

Use volume = length × width × height and choose an answer in cubic units. For example, a prism that is 3 units long, 2 units wide, and 2 units high contains 12 unit cubes.

A starting point for fifth-grade math

This game practices unit-cube volume and whole-number rectangular prisms, connected to Common Core 5.MD.C.3–5, especially 5.MD.C.5a–b. It introduces one part of fifth-grade learning; use it alongside classroom teaching, discussion, and hands-on models.

How to get started

  1. Open Fifth grade and choose Volume Builders.
  2. Build the height in the story by adding equal layers.
  3. Count the cubes in each layer, multiply by the height, and choose the volume.

There is no time limit for answering. A correct answer moves to the next question after five seconds; Next moves on sooner. Follow your child’s pace and pause whenever they need a break.
