Compare bars of equal length. One half of a small bar and one half of a much larger bar are the same fraction of different wholes, but not the same absolute length.
The denominator counts all the equal parts in one whole; the numerator counts the shaded parts. More parts means smaller individual pieces when the whole stays fixed.
Splitting each half into two makes fourths. Multiply both 1 and 2 by 2: 1/2 = 2/4. Multiplying only the denominator would change the amount.
The bars shown here represent the same whole. The top bar has one of two equal parts shaded; the bottom has two of four. Their shaded lengths match. This is why 1/2 and 2/4 are equivalent.

If a learner counts pieces without considering their size, return to equal-sized bars or folded strips of paper. Compare the shaded lengths first, then name the fractions. Explain the picture before using a multiplication rule.
