What to practice
Connect addition and multiplication
For three rows of four, count 4 + 4 + 4 = 12 and connect that to 3 × 4 = 12. Say what each number describes in the story.
Explain another arrangement
Turn the array to see four rows of three. The layout changes but the total does not. Ask the child to explain that using the counters, not only by repeating a fact.
Three rows of four make twelve
There are 3 equal rows. Each row contains 4 counters. Count by fours: 4, 8, 12. The total is 12, so 3 × 4 = 12. Adding 3 + 4 would count the dimensions, not all the counters.

- Draw 2 rows of 5 dots. Write an addition sentence and a multiplication sentence.
- Draw 4 rows of 3 dots. How many dots are there?
- Use 12 counters to build a different array. Describe the rows and the number in each row.

If the total is incorrect, check the row sizes before asking for a faster answer. Use real counters or draw circles. Once the structure makes sense, practice recalling facts without removing the option to use a model.
